The SVP, National Underwriting Manager – Western Region leads underwriting operations across the Western United States, overseeing corporate and branch underwriting teams. This role is responsible for maintaining credit quality, ensuring compliance with investor and regulatory requirements, driving operational efficiency, and supporting the company’s strategic growth objectives. The ideal candidate demonstrates exceptional leadership, strong risk management expertise, and a commitment to maintaining the highest professional and ethical standards.
 
 
 
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following responsibilities, but not limited to:
 
  • Maintain expertise in current investor, agency, and corporate underwriting guidelines.
  • Communicate and deliver training on underwriting policies, procedures, and regulatory updates to underwriting staff and leadership teams.
  • Partner with Compliance leadership to ensure adherence to all applicable federal and state regulations.
  • Maintain current knowledge of HUD and VA underwriting guidelines, including policy and regulatory changes.
  • Participate in the development, implementation, and maintenance of underwriting policies and guidelines.
  • Review new product guidelines and provide recommendations related to underwriting standards and credit risk.
  • Ensure underwriting teams meet established productivity, quality, and service-level expectations.
  • Collaborate with operations and underwriting leadership to identify challenges, implement solutions, and improve processes.
  • Lead training initiatives related to new products, procedures, systems, and policy updates.
  • Recruit, hire, train, mentor, and develop underwriting team members and leaders.
  • Provide ongoing leadership, coaching, performance management, and professional development support.
  • Analyze operational trends and prepare weekly and monthly reporting to support strategic planning and staffing decisions.
  • Partner closely with Quality Control, Post-Closing, Investor Purchasing, and other fulfillment departments to ensure company quality standards are consistently achieved.
  • Support organizational initiatives and perform additional responsibilities as assigned.
 
 
 
Qualifications and Experience:
 
  • Minimum of 10 years of mortgage underwriting experience, including Conventional, Jumbo, and Government loan products.
  • Minimum of 5 years of underwriting leadership or management experience.
  • Proven leadership experience within a retail mortgage lending environment.
  • Strong knowledge of Desktop Underwriter (DU) and Loan Product Advisor (LP), with demonstrated adaptability to new systems and technologies.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and decision-making abilities.
  • Ability to work independently while effectively collaborating across teams and departments.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Prior quality assurance or quality control management experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong leadership presence with a high degree of integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.

Direct Reports: Divisional Underwriting Managers and Underwriting Managers
              
 
Physical and Environmental Conditions:
 
This role operates in an ADA compliant office environment, utilizing typical office equipment and tasks including computer work. The position may involve partial stationary positions and moving throughout the day. Flexibility to work overtime to meet project deadlines is required.
 
Base Compensation Information: This role is currently allocated for candidates within geographic regions that do not currently require base wage disclosure. The compensation range for this position will be provided upon request. (Due to their geographic location, residents of the states of CA & CO, and for NY are excluded from this role at this time.)
